Castings which are prone to defects such as sand fusion, core breakage etc. or have a very thin core cross section can be cast with better and consistent quality using Chromite sand as mould and core material. Chromite sand has a significantly higher softening point compared to Silica sand. This helps in prevention of sand fusion, while high density of the sand provides better bonding strength and better conduction of heat through the core.
